Astrophytum ornatum is the southern genus of Astrophytum. The habitats are at  Hidalgo, Queretaro and Guanajuato.
Astropyhtum ornatum was described 1828 from Professor Auguste Pyrame DE CANDOLLE as Echinocactus ornatus.
Specimen are growing in wild canyons and cliffs. Heat and limestone ground is important  for a successful culture.
